Responsibilities

Host Physician and Clinic Responsibilities

Information for Locum Physicians

The clinic must provide the locum physician - in advance of the locum assignment - with a list of the responsibilities that the host physician expects the locum physician to fulfill (e.g. information on clinic hours, EMR, lab, x-ray, rounds/call, CME schedules, physiotherapy, social worker, mental health, public health, passwords, consultant lists, etc.) as well as an explanation of all payments and supports the locum physician can expect to receive during, and resulting from, the locum assignment.

The clinic must also provide the locum physician with detailed information on the care and treatment of patients in hospital or those requiring special treatment.

Hospital Privileges

If necessary, the host physician or clinic must assist in establishing local hospital privileges on behalf of the locum physician for the term of the locum assignment.

Policies

Requesting Services

Eligible host physicians must request locum services from Locums for Rural BC. Both fee-for-service physicians and physicians who receive compensation through APP agreements may request locum physicians through the program, if they and their community meet the eligibility criteria.

Each request must meet the minimum number of days in duration for the respective program.

When requesting locum assistance, the host physician must identify whether additional enhanced skills are required by the locum physician (e.g. obstetrics/ gynecology, emergency, anesthesia, or general surgery for the RGPLP). These skills must routinely be provided by the host physician and be required by rural hospitals in order to be requested.

Requests may not be filled depending on availability of locum physicians and program funding.
